Course Description

The Yin Yoga Certificate is an immersive 8-hour training designed to introduce certified MFC yoga teachers to the foundations, philosophy, principles, and practical application of Yin Yoga.

Participants will explore the unique characteristics of Yin Yoga, including longer-held, passive postures, mindful awareness, functional anatomy, energetic concepts, and the importance of finding an appropriate edge while practicing safely and compassionately.

Through a combination of theory, and teaching exercises, participants will learn how to create and sequence effective Yin Yoga classes for a variety of students and experience levels.

This training is suitable for yoga teachers who wish to deepen their personal practice and develop the skills and confidence to incorporate Yin Yoga into their teaching.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the origins, philosophy, and fundamental principles of Yin Yoga.

  • Understand the difference between Yin Yoga and more active yang-based practices.

  • Apply key Yin Yoga principles, including stillness, time, sensation, and mindfulness

  • Identify common Yin Yoga postures and their primary target areas.

  • Use functional anatomy to understand individual differences in Yin postures.

  • Offer appropriate modifications, variations, props, and alternatives.

  • Recognize the importance of working within an individual's appropriate range of sensation.

  • Understand meridian lines and their application to Yin Yoga.

  • Design safe and effective Yin Yoga sequences.


    Join Sheena Kilpatrick the instructor for this course!

    Sheena Kilpatrick is an experienced yoga and fitness educator with more than 25 years of experience in movement, health, and wellness. Sheena holds a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education and is a 650-hour certified yoga instructor. Her yoga education includes 500 hours of intensive Hatha and Ashtanga Yoga training completed in India, where she developed a strong foundation in traditional yoga philosophy, meditation, pranayama, and asana. She has continued her education through specialized training in Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, and Pre and Post-Natal Yoga.

    In 2016, Sheena completed her Yin Yoga teacher training with renowned Yin Yoga teacher and author Bernie Clark in Vancouver. Her interest in Eastern philosophy, Tai Chi, meditation, and the deeper contemplative aspects of yoga continues to influence her teaching. She integrates these traditions with her scientific and exercise-based background as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist to create classes that are both thoughtful and accessible.

    With her combination of traditional yoga education, movement science, and years of teaching experience, Sheena brings a unique perspective to Yin Yoga—one that honours both the ancient traditions of yoga and our contemporary understanding of the body.
